“THE GREAT OUTDOORS”

ONE IMPACT OF THE LATEST PANDEMIC IS THE NEED FOR MORE OUTDOOR SPACE TO COMMUTE, EAT, SOCIALIZE, AND EXERCISE.

WE DON’T NEED FORTRESSES OF HEALTH AND SAFETY; WE NEED VILLAGES: NODES OF GATHERING AND CONNECTION WITHIN A WORLD OF SPRAWL. THE TRADITIONAL CITY IS NOT THE SOLUTION, BUT NEITHER IS THE SUBURB: WE SHOULD ASPIRE TO SOME NEW FORM OF HYBRID BETWEEN OPENNESS AND DENSITY AT EVERY SCALE.

IN THE HEART OF LONDON, IN THE DENSE MONOCULTURAL AREA, THE NEED FOR MORE OUTDOOR SPACES, PARKS, GREEN AREAS TO BE INTEGRATED WITHIN THE CITY AND BUSY BLOCKS IS ESSENTIAL, WHICH SOMEHOW BRINGS RURAL LIFE BACK INTO THE CITY.

THE NEED FOR FLEXIBILITY OF JOBS AND WORKING HOURS IS ALSO BECOMING ESSENTIAL.

INTRODUCING A NEW BUILDING TO THE BLOCK, WHICH COMBINES THE PRIVATE AND PUBLIC USE IN THE SAME BLOCK. THE BUILDING IS LIFTED OFF THE GROUND, TO PROVIDE A PUBLIC PLAZA, AND BENEATH AN UNDERGROUND TUNNEL AS A CONTINUATION TO THE PEDESTRIAN NETWORK, DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, PEOPLE ARE WALKING AND CYCLING ALL OVER THE WORLD. THE BUILDING CAN BE A PRIVATE OFFICE, OR CAN BE A SPACE FOR LEASING OR RENTING FOR THE INDIVIDUALS WHO NEED A WORK SPACE WHEN IT’S NOT POSSIBLE TO BE IN THEIR WORK PLACE OR WHEN THEY WORK REMOTELY.

AN OFFICE BUILDING, THAT STANDS IN THE HEART OF LONDON, WITH AN OPENNESS TO THE GREAT OURDOORS. AS THE SURRONDING AREA IS MOSTLY COMMERCIAL AND OFFICE BUILDINGS, THE NEED FOR A BREATHING SPACE IS NECESSARY. THE BUILDING IS LIFTED ABOVE THE GROUND, WHICH PROVIDES A PLAZA / PARK/ GREEN AREA FOR THE PUBLIC. A GREEN ROOF IS ALSO A MAIN FEATURE OF THIS BUILDING AS SEMI PRIVATE SPACE. INSIDE THE BUILDING, ALL SPACES SURROUND THE MIDDLE “INNER FOREST” WHICH IS LIKE THE LUNGS FOR THE BUILDING. THIS COULD BE A PRIVATE OFFICE BUILDING, OR A SPACE FOR LEASING AND FOR INDIVIDUALS WHO CAN NOT REACH THEIR WORK PLACES OR WORK REMOTELY.
